The renowned mixed martial artist and former MU wrestler Michael Chandler has won his second Bellator championship and he nailed it in a complete emphatic manner.

Chandler (15-3 MMA, 12-3 BMMA) knocked out his competitor Patricky Freire (16-8 MMA, 9-7 BMMA) with one monstrous right hand on the button in the first round to win Bellator’s vacant lightweight title. The previous holder of the title, Will Brooks signed with the UFC and thus the belt was vacated.

The lightweight title bout was organized at Scottrade Center in St. Louis and it was the co-main event of Bellator 157 event.

The bout started in an intriguing fashion, as both the fighters were looking for an opening. Both Chandler and Freire were raining punches but failed to connect those, until the American went for a single-leg takedown about a minute in. But his counterpart defended it, and the fight stayed on the feet.

But just two minutes past the bout, Chandler connected his first punch and what a thunderous punch it was. The 30-year old fighter from Missouri took one massive punch to plant the Brazilian on the canvas and emerged as the new lightweight champion with a stunning knockout. At the 2:14 mark of the fight, the officials ended the tie and handed Chandler the eluded belt.

After the bout, Chandler was informed that former WEC lightweight and UFC champion Benson Henderson, who fought for the Bellator welterweight title and lost earlier this year, was interested in locking horn with the new lightweight champ. The new Bellator lightweight champion said he would gladly accept the challenge or Josh Thomson, the fighter Chandler was supposed to fight a month ago.

Chandler commented, “It feels so great.I had a great opportunity here. I can’t wait to defend this thing. I’m getting better every single day. I want to be the best in the world. I would love to step in here and be his Huckleberry. I do have some unfinished business with Josh Thomson, but those are both fights I want.”
