The name of the driver who allegedly raped the girl is Prem Raj Rai. The Police said that the driver had been charged under the act 376 of the Indian Penal Code. The sub-divisional police officer of North Sikkim Palden Bhutia, said, “A case under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012 has also been started against the driver,”. A group of three girls reached Gangtok on 13th of May for a vacation after the class 12th examination results were out. They checked into a hotel which is run by a relative of one of the girls of the group. The group of girls hired the taxi on Sunday afternoon to visit the nearby tourist spots. The driver himself guided the girls and took them to the Tashi viewpoint and Rumtek monastery. He also said that there are waterfalls nearby which could be visited. So the girls agreed to do so. According to the girls, the driver had offered some foods and snacks to them. However, two of the girls rejected, and the third one sitting on the front seat ate those. Soon after that, the girl who ate those foods offered by the driver started feeling drowsy, and the driver advanced her physically. The two other girls protested but the driver assaulted them and forced them out of the girl and drove away with the other girl. The girls were terrified and said that they had to walk quite a long distance to seek help from the locals. Meanwhile, they informed the hotel owner who lodged a complaint at the Sardar Police Station. The East Sikkim police contacted the North Sikkim Police and with the help of the locals and Pudong Police Station personnel arrested the driver and rescued the victim. The locals said that the girl was in a state of shock and had marks of injury on her face and neck. Though the girls were staying at East Sikkim, the case will be transferred to the North Sikkim Police because the incident took place there. The girls will report before the magistrate to record their statement. The incident did not only shock the locals but also the tourists, as the state is known to be a peaceful one.
